The City Manager, Amanda Mack, is the City’s Chief Executive and is responsible to the City Commission for the proper administration of City business. The City Manager carries out the day-to-day responsibilities of running the entire organization. The personnel who comprise this department play a vital role for the community by acting as a link between the public and all employees. This department is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the City, along with a multitude of other administrative duties, including the budget development, coordination of human resources functions, and receiving many of the concerns that various citizens and groups may bring forth. The city manager reports directly to the City Commission, who is the policy-making body of the organization. The City Commission makes laws and sets policy, and it is the responsibility of the city manager to ensure these policies are carried out.

The City Finance Department provides financial support to the entire organization, in accordance with GAAP, GASB regulations, the state laws and administrative policies established by the City Commission. The finance officer is responsible for recording minutes of City Commission meetings and keeps custody of official documents of the City Commission.

The Canton Public Works Department employs 5 year round full time employees specific to the Divisions listed in this section. Additionally, 2 part time employees work at the City’s Rubble Site and 5 seasonal full time employees work during the summer months.

The Canton Public Library celebrated 100 years of service in October 2013! Centrally located one block north of the Lincoln County Courthouse, the library provides a large selection of books, e-books, magazines, audio and movies for people of all ages.

The City of Canton wishes to enhance the quality of life of our community by providing diverse recreational facilities, programs and services and preserving and developing our natural resources. Residents have several options for recreational endeavors. Hikers and nature-lovers can discover peaceful hiking on the scenic trails, while kayaks and canoes can enjoy the Big Sioux River. Several of our parks are equipped with picnic tables and shelters for those wishing to enjoy an afternoon picnic.
The rubble site is a drop off site for debris in Lincoln County. It is located east of Canton on Highway 18, across from the hospital and golf course. Please read over the rules, regulations and fees before taking any items to the site.

Free Saturday is the last Saturday of every month. There is no load fee but charges for white goods with and without freon equipment (dehumidifiers, air conditioners, refrigerators & freezers) and tires still apply.
*Grass clippings & leaves can be brought to the City Shop (located at 9th & Lincoln) at any time.
